Homeopathy

The first homeopathic consultation takes approximately one hour. During this time, a full and detailed case history of your animal is taken. This includes a description of the presenting complaint, any additional symptoms, past medical history, diet including appetite and thirst and information about the animal's personality and behaviour. A clinical examination is then carried out. With referral cases, a full case history will be obtained from the referring veterinary practice. Using the information obtained in the consultation, the case is analysed. One of the methods of analysis uses a computer software program. The case analysis enables the patient's symptoms to be matched to one of the several hundred remedies. The matching remedy will be prescribed with the aim of stimulating the body's self-healing mechanism and so restoring health in a gentle and permanent way. The remedy will usually be in liquid form, which I have found easier to give to animals than tablets or powders. It will either be supplied at the time of the consultation or sent by post a few days later. Full instructions about dosage and storage of the remedies will be provided.

Acupuncture

The first acupuncture consultation lasts approximately 30 minutes. The needles are inserted for about 20 minutes. Most animals respond in a relaxed manner to acupuncture and some dogs go to sleep during the procedure. Between 10-20 needles are commonly used. These are disposable and used only once. Normally an initial course of 4 treatments is carried out at weekly intervals. These are then reduced to intervals of 4-6 weeks, depending on the individual's response. Acupuncture is very useful for the treatment of conditions such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, spinal conditions and lick granuloma. It can also be used together with conventional medicines for arthritis such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
